POOL MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN

SUMMARY:

The Pool Maintenance Technician works in the care of equipment and upkeep of the swimming pool facilities and other related maintenance duties as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Duties in this class are distinguished from those performed in the Maintenance area in that they require more knowledge of the basic operations and methods involved and the ability to carry out functions of this role without supervision. Responsibilities include general grounds duties as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Monitors, handles, records, and administers all chemicals for swimming pools.
  • Performs daily cleaning of swimming pools.
  • Performs minor repairs to swimming pools, pool areas, equipment, etc.
  • Responsible for ordering and maintaining inventory of chemicals, parts, and supplies as needed.
  • Perform minor carpentry, plumbing and/or electrical repairs; maintain swimming pool grounds including trash pickup.
  • Performs semi-skilled painting touch up of pool area, fencing and equipment room.
  • Assembles furniture and other structures within the pool area.  Daily organization of pool furniture, rugs, equipment, etc.
  • Makes minor adjustments and keeps equipment in good repair and working order.
  • Performs heavy manual labor, custodial, and grounds work as needed to clean and maintain the swimming pools and pool areas per property.
  • Assist with resident functions and other duties as requested by your supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience

One-year experience in general swimming pool maintenance, including the handling of chemicals desired.

Licenses and Other Requirements

  • National Swimming Pool Foundation Certification as a Certified/Spa Operator
  • Valid Driver License
  • Current & Valid vehicle insurance

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • Proper swimming pool cleaning methods and techniques and use of swimming pool chemicals.
  • Record keeping of chemical levels as tested when onsite.  Maintain correct chemical levels and adjust levels as needed.
  • Basic operations, tools and terms used in building, grounds, and custodial maintenance.
  • Fundamentals of carpentry, painting, plumbing, and shop practices.

Ability to

  • Quickly learn the necessary procedures and methods used to maintain campus swimming pools in good working order.
  • Secure and keep current certifications as a Certified Pool/Spa Operator.
  • Maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with supervisor and other employees
  • Use proper methods of maintenance or mechanical repair work and acquire skill quickly in work requiring mechanical ability.
  • Drive vehicle safely and in accordance with traffic laws between communities owned and operated within the city in which you are hired.
  • Perform heavy manual labor.
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling object(s) weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Understand and carry out written directions.
  • Ability to plan, organize and schedule work.
  • Perform varied tasks.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Environment

  • Indoor/outdoor environment subject to changing conditions and temperatures exceeding 90 degrees at times.
  • Must know how to swim. 
  • Working on ladders at varying heights.

Physical Demands

  • Maintain balance.
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling object(s) weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Standing for extended periods of time.
  • Swimming in the swimming pool to re-attach railings/ladders, remove trash, debris and furniture from inside the swimming pool.
  • Reaching overhead, horizontally and above the shoulders.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of specialized tools and equipment.
  • Clarity of vision at varying distances to operate equipment and to drive.
  • Verbal, auditory, and written capabilities to effectively communicate in an articulate manner.
  • Continuous hand-eye coordination and manipulation of large and small objects.

Hazards

  •  Working with chemicals, tools, and powered machinery.
